Nestled in central Alberta along Highway 39, Thorsby sits roughly 38 kilometres west of Leduc, placing it within comfortable reach of the greater Edmonton region. The town is a member of the Leduc-Nisku Economic Development Association, an economic partnership that promotes Alberta’s International Region in connection with the Edmonton International Airport. Just 20 kilometres to the south lies Pigeon Lake and Pigeon Lake Provincial Park, offering residents and visitors easy access to one of central Alberta’s well-known recreational lakes.

Thorsby covers a land area of approximately 3.8 square kilometres and recorded a population of 967 residents in the 2021 federal census, a modest decline of about 1.8 percent from the 985 people counted in 2016. That 2016 figure itself represented a 3.6 percent increase over the 951 residents tallied in 2011, reflecting a period of modest growth before the slight recent dip. A 2017 municipal census put the population at 1,015, just slightly below the 1,025 recorded in the 2015 municipal count. With roughly 254 people per square kilometre, the town maintains a compact, close-knit character typical of small Alberta communities.
