Acme, Alberta, T0M 0A0, Canada

Nestled in south-central Alberta, roughly 83 kilometres northeast of Calgary, Acme sits within Kneehill County and holds the distinction of being the first village incorporated within the county. The community’s name carries an interesting backstory rooted in its railway origins. When the Canadian Pacific Railway extended its network into the area in 1909, the local station represented the most northerly stop on the entire CPR network at that time. Surveyors drew on the Greek word meaning “the highest point” – acme – to name the settlement, a fitting tribute to its position on the line. The first train pulled into the station on July 7, 1910, and the village was formally incorporated on that very same day.

According to the 2021 Census, Acme had a population of 606 residents living in 272 of its 294 private dwellings, reflecting a modest decline of 7.2% from the 653 residents recorded in both the 2016 and 2011 censuses. The village covers a land area of 2.49 square kilometres, giving it a population density of approximately 243 people per square kilometre. Agriculture forms the backbone of the local economy, with grain farming, livestock operations, oil and natural gas activity, and trucking all playing notable roles. Visitors and residents alike enjoy a range of recreational facilities, including a campground, curling rink, golf course, outdoor pool, outdoor and indoor skating options, beach volleyball, soccer fields, three ball diamonds, and a senior centre. Cultural life centres around the Acme Municipal Library and the Acme Community Centre, the latter having replaced the original Memorial Hall after it was lost to fire in 2004. The community is also home to Acme School, serving students from kindergarten through grade 6 and grades 10 through 12, with its sports teams proudly known as the Acme Reds. Among the village’s notable former residents is the Honourable Helen Hunley, who became the first female Lieutenant Governor of Alberta.
