Nestled at the crossroads of Highway 625 and Highway 814 in Alberta’s Edmonton Metropolitan Region, Beaumont sits adjacent to Leduc County and shares a border with the City of Edmonton. The City of Leduc lies just 6.0 kilometres to the southwest, while the Nisku Industrial Park is roughly 4.0 kilometres to the west and the Edmonton International Airport is approximately 8.0 kilometres to the southwest. Highway 814 runs north to south through the city, linking Beaumont directly to Edmonton, while Highway 625 travels east to west, connecting Nisku and surrounding communities to the broader region.
A Community with Deep French Roots
Beaumont’s origins trace back to a French-speaking farming settlement, and that heritage remains visible today. The city’s downtown core is designed to evoke the atmosphere of a French village, featuring distinctive architecture and red brick walkways. At the heart of the city stands St. Vital Church, built in 1919, which sits atop the prominent rise that inspired the city’s name. The word Beaumont translates from French as “beautiful hill,” a name formally adopted in 1895 when residents submitted a petition requesting a local post office. Beaumont is also one of only four officially bilingual municipalities in all of Alberta. The community incorporated as a village on January 1, 1973, became a town on January 1, 1980, and was granted city status on January 1, 2019.
Growth, Population, and Local Life
According to the 2021 Census conducted by Statistics Canada, Beaumont had a population of 20,888 residents living in 6,950 of its 7,168 private dwellings. That figure represented a growth of 19.7% compared to the 2016 population of 17,457, which itself had jumped 31% from the 2011 count of 13,284. The city covers a land area of 24.7 square kilometres, giving it a population density of approximately 845.7 people per square kilometre. As of 2014, roughly half of Beaumont’s workforce – about 49.6% – commuted to nearby Edmonton for employment. On the cultural side, the city hosts the Beaumont Music Festival, formerly known as the Beaumont Blues and Roots Festival, which has welcomed performers such as Chantal Kreviazuk, Corb Lund, The Sheepdogs, Sloan, 54-40, and The Grapes of Wrath, among many others. The annual Beaumont Days Festival, held each early summer, brings the community together with a parade, carnival, and events centred around the Bibliotheque de Beaumont Library. Economically, the city participates in the Leduc-Nisku Economic Development Association, a regional partnership that promotes Alberta’s International Region in connection with the Edmonton International Airport.
