Nestled among the rich black soils of the Canadian Prairies, Beiseker sits roughly 70 kilometres northeast of Calgary, placing it within the outer edges of the Calgary Region and inside Calgary’s Census Metropolitan Area. The village lies entirely within Rocky View County, with nearby communities including Irricana, Kathyrn, and Acme. Its position at the intersection of Highways 9, 72, and 806 gives it strong road connectivity, and its location roughly halfway between Calgary and Drumheller has long made it a practical service and trade hub for the surrounding agricultural landscape. A small airport lies about five kilometres east of town along Alberta Highway 9, and the village hosts a campground and motel that draw travellers heading toward Saskatoon or Drumheller.
Beiseker’s origins trace back to 1908, when the Calgary Colonization Company recruited ethnic German settlers from the Great Plains of the Dakotas to demonstrate the area’s grain-growing potential. The village takes its name from Thomas Lincoln Beiseker (1866-1941), a partner and vice president of that company. Growth accelerated in 1910 with the completion of a Canadian Pacific Railway branch line, and a second rail line – now operated by Canadian National Railway – followed in 1912. Telephone service arrived that same year, with electricity coming later in 1928. The village achieved official village status in 1921. Beiseker earned the nickname the World Wheat King Capital after local farmers, including Jerry Leiske and Larry Hixt, won top honours at prestigious competitions such as the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto. Today, the community supports local agriculture through fertilizer supply, seed cleaning, soil testing, a UFA outlet, and a Canadian Malting Co. grain elevator, alongside industries serving the oilpatch. Beiseker Community School, first opened in 1914 and now part of the Rocky View Schools system, serves students from kindergarten through grade 12, while Baptist, Catholic, and Anglican congregations serve the spiritual needs of residents.
