Bragg Creek Map

Nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, roughly 30 kilometres west of Calgary along Highway 8 and Highway 22, Bragg Creek sits at the point where the Elbow River meets Bragg Creek itself, just north of the junction of Highway 66 and Highway 22. The hamlet falls under the jurisdiction of Rocky View County in Division No. 6, and its proximity to both Kananaskis Country and the broader Rocky Mountain foothills has long shaped the character of the community. Residents here include outdoor enthusiasts, artists, ranchers, and local business owners, and the hamlet has also served as a filming location for several movies and television productions.

The community takes its name from Albert Warren Bragg, originally from Collingwood, Nova Scotia, and his 14-year-old brother John Thomas, who homesteaded in the area in 1894. Ranching formed the backbone of the local economy in those early years, with recreational activity beginning to diversify things from the 1920s onward. A notable piece of Canadian history also has roots here: in 1933, sisters Mary Belle and Catherine Barclay established the first hostel in a tent in Bragg Creek, and by 1938 they had officially founded and registered the Canadian Youth Hostel Association, now known as HI Canada. Today, visitors come for the quaint shops and restaurants in the hamlet centre, as well as the many outdoor pursuits nearby. The Greater Bragg Creek Trails Association has developed over 140 kilometres of trails for hiking, mountain biking, snowshoeing, and horseback riding, while Bragg Creek Provincial Park and the Canyon Creek Ice Cave draw additional visitors throughout the year. The scenic Elbow Falls is also a short drive away. Several summer camps operate in the surrounding area, including Easter Seals Camp Horizon and Kamp Kiwanis, and an annual mountain marathon called the powderface42 takes place nearby each year.
