Enchant, Municipal District of Taber, Alberta, Canada

Nestled along Highway 526 in the heart of southern Alberta, Enchant sits between the communities of Vauxhall and Lomond, at an elevation of 810 metres above sea level. The hamlet falls within the Municipal District of Taber, which is part of census division No. 2, and it is represented federally within the riding of Medicine Hat. The Canadian Pacific Kansas City railway also passes through the area, a line whose arrival in 1914 helped shape the early development of the community.

The history of Enchant stretches back over a century. Following the railway’s arrival, the first grain elevator was completed in 1915, establishing Enchant as an agricultural hub in the region. The hamlet holds a notable place in Canadian religious history as the founding location of the Evangelical Free Church of Canada, which was established here in 1917. At one point Enchant carried the status of an incorporated village, though that designation was dissolved on February 1, 1945, after which it became a hamlet. According to the Municipal District of Taber’s 2016 municipal census, Enchant had a population of 259 residents, representing a decline of roughly 10.4% from the 289 people recorded in the 2013 municipal census.
