Glendon Map

Tucked into northern Alberta north of St. Paul, the village of Glendon covers a compact land area of 1.99 km² and carries an interesting piece of local history in its very name – the community was named after the maiden name of an early postmaster’s mother. As of the 2021 Census conducted by Statistics Canada, Glendon was home to 516 residents living in 208 of its 256 private dwellings, reflecting a growth of 4.7% from its 2016 population of 493. That earlier census had itself recorded a modest increase from the 2011 count of 486, pointing to a community that has seen slow but steady growth over the years. At the 2021 count, the village had a population density of 259.3 people per km².

Glendon is perhaps best known beyond the region for its Giant Perogy, a roadside landmark unveiled in 1993 that stands 7.6 metres tall and is accompanied by an oversized fork. It is counted among the celebrated Giants of the Prairies and draws visitors curious about the Ukrainian cultural heritage woven into this part of Alberta. The village is also the hometown of former NHL player Stan Smyl, adding a note of hockey pride to the community’s identity.
