Grovedale, Municipal District of Greenview, Alberta, Canada

Tucked into the northern Alberta foothills just south of the Wapiti River valley, Grovedale sits along Highway 666 a short distance south of Grande Prairie, within the Municipal District of Greenview No. 16. The surrounding countryside is a blend of farmland and ranchland, positioned at the northern edge of the boreal forests and aspen parkland where the landscape begins its gradual rise toward the foothills of the Canadian Rockies. With a population of approximately 138 residents, Grovedale is a small but established rural community with deep agricultural roots.

Settlement in the area dates back to 1928, when William and Mary Gabler made Grovedale their home. In the early days, residents relied on a ferry service across the Wapiti River, which began operating in 1934 under the ownership of T.E. Cooke. A ferryman’s house was built on the riverbank and occupied by Otto Sorely from 1934 to 1945, with his wages paid not in currency but in food and supplies from ferry users. A post office and general store arrived in 1939, the same year local farmers began cultivating alfalfa. The community’s first school opened its doors in 1945 to a class of 14 children, and by 1967 the expanded school had been renamed Penson Elementary School. A permanent bridge over the Wapiti River opened on 28 November 1958, replacing temporary lumber company bridges that were regularly swept away each spring. Electrical service reached Grovedale that same year, followed by natural gas lines in the 1970s. O’Brien Provincial Park, established in 1954 and named after Dr. L.J. O’Brien, Grovedale’s first forest ranger who began his service in 1932, lies nearby and adds a natural landmark to the community’s surroundings. The Grovedale Community Centre was built in 1975, and the Landry Heights subdivision received approval in 1976.
