Sitting at the crossroads of Highway 12 and Highway 855, roughly 122 kilometres east of Red Deer, Halkirk occupies a stretch of central Alberta prairie within the County of Paintearth No. 18. The surrounding landscape is a mix of open farmland, grassland prairie, and badlands terrain. The community takes its name from Halkirk, Scotland, a connection that dates back to its earliest days as a settlement. Halkirk was formally incorporated as a village on February 10, 1912, and for over a century it maintained that status. Following a vote held in October 2024, however, the Village of Halkirk was dissolved on January 1, 2025, and the community transitioned to hamlet status under the jurisdiction of the County of Paintearth No. 18.
The 2021 Census recorded a population of 92 residents living in 50 of the community’s 58 private dwellings, representing a decline of nearly 18% from the 112 people counted in 2016, which itself was down from 121 in 2011. With a land area of just 0.61 square kilometres, the population density stood at roughly 150.8 people per square kilometre in 2021. Despite its small size, Halkirk sits within a productive agricultural region and is surrounded by several notable industrial operations, including a mining facility, a power generating station, and oilfield support services. Among the most prominent features in the area is the wind farm operated by Capital Power Corporation, which launched commercial operations on December 1, 2012. The facility comprises 83 Vestas V90 wind turbines with a total capacity of 150 megawatts, making it one of Alberta’s largest wind energy installations. Halkirk is also known as the hometown of Shane Doan, a former professional hockey player who spent his career with the Arizona Coyotes. The community was previously home to Mother Teresa Halkirk Catholic School, which operated under the East Central Alberta Catholic Separate School Board until its closure in 2016 due to declining enrolment.
