Nestled along Highway 2 roughly 34 kilometres north of Edmonton, Morinville sits within the Edmonton Metropolitan Region of Alberta, Canada. Its position along one of the province’s busiest corridors makes it a convenient community for residents who work in or around the capital, while still maintaining its own distinct character as a growing town with deep historical roots.
A Community Shaped by History
The story of Morinville begins with Jean-Baptiste Morin, a priest and missionary with the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, who guided a wave of French settlers to the area in the late 1800s. A number of German pioneers followed, adding further diversity to the settlement’s early years. By 1894, the community had its first post office, marking a key step in its formal development. One of the most visible reminders of those founding years is the pioneer monument located in St. Jean Baptiste Park, which lists the names of many early settlers. Originally standing at the corner of 100 Avenue and 100 Street, the monument was relocated to the park in 2000 to address safety concerns caused by heavy traffic at that intersection. The Roman Catholic Church of the St. Jean Baptiste Parish, constructed in 1907, became a provincial historical site in 1975 along with its adjacent Morinville Convent, which is no longer in operation. On June 30, 2021, the church was destroyed by a suspicious fire that remained under investigation, but the congregation persevered and the rebuilt church re-opened on December 18, 2025. Morinville also holds a notable place in Canadian banking history, having been one of the first communities in Western Canada to open a Royal Bank of Canada branch in 1910, and later establishing a credit union in 1940. The internationally recognized pet food company Champion Pet Foods, which exports products around the world and employs roughly 50 people locally, is among the town’s more prominent businesses today. As of 2010, residential properties account for 93% of the town’s tax base.
Population, Land Area, and Recreation
According to the 2021 federal census conducted by Statistics Canada, Morinville had a population of 10,385 people living in 3,768 of its 3,981 private dwellings. That figure represented a 5.5% increase from the 9,848 residents recorded in the 2016 census, which itself was a 14.9% jump from the 8,569 counted in 2011. The town’s own 2020 municipal census placed the population slightly higher at 10,578, reflecting continued growth. Morinville covers a land area of 11.15 square kilometres, giving it a population density of approximately 931.4 residents per square kilometre as of the 2021 census. In terms of things to see and do, the town offers walking trails, a splash park, a trout pond, a skateboard park, a hockey arena, a curling rink, and numerous parks and playgrounds. Outdoor fitness equipment is available along the trail network and at the splash park, and the Morinville Leisure Centre serves as a central hub for community recreation. Additional amenities can also be found in the nearby cities of St. Albert and Edmonton to the south.
