Nestled in the Battle River valley of east-central Alberta, Wainwright sits roughly 206 kilometres southeast of Edmonton, placing it well within the agricultural heartland of the province. Two major roads connect the community to the broader region: Highway 14 and Highway 41, the latter of which carries the name the Buffalo Trail. The town lies 61 kilometres south of Vermilion and is positioned west of the Alberta-Saskatchewan border, giving it a natural role as a service hub for surrounding rural communities. CFB Wainwright, a Canadian Forces base, is located in the nearby community of Denwood, just to the southwest.
From Denwood to Wainwright: A Brief History
The story of Wainwright begins with a settler named James Dawson, who established an original townsite in 1905 and called it Denwood. That changed when the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway arrived and relocated the settlement approximately 5 kilometres to the west-northwest, renaming it after General William Wainwright, who served as the railway’s second vice-president. A post office opened at the original Denwood site in 1907, along with a hotel and store. By 1908, both the post office and the hotel had followed the town’s shift westward, with the hotel eventually taking on the name Wainwright Hotel. The old original townsite later became the grounds for what is now CFB Wainwright. Today, the town is also a divisional point on the Canadian National Railway main line, and the Wainwright railway station is served by Via Rail’s cross-country service, The Canadian.
Community Life, Population, and Local Highlights
According to the 2021 federal census, Wainwright had a population of 6,606 residents living across 2,664 occupied private dwellings out of a total of 2,914. That figure represented a 5.1% increase over the 2016 count of 6,285, continuing a growth trend that has been consistent over the past decade. The town covers a land area of 12.17 square kilometres, which works out to a population density of roughly 543 people per square kilometre. On the cultural side, Wainwright is home to the third-largest stampede in Canada, held each year at the end of June. The event draws visitors for a rodeo, chuckwagon races, a parade, a midway, an agricultural fair, and a town-wide horse race open to anyone aged 18 and over. Locally, residents are served by two radio stations – CKKY-FM (K-Rock 101.9) and CKWY-FM (Wayne-FM) – as well as a weekly newspaper, the Star/Edge, published every Friday. Education in the area is supported by several school divisions, including Buffalo Trail Public Schools Regional Division No. 28, East Central Alberta Catholic Separate Schools Regional Division No. 16, and the Greater North Central Francophone Education Region No. 2, with schools such as Wainwright High School, Blessed Sacrament School, and École Saint-Christophe serving local families.
